I just rewatched the John Wayne movie “The Shootist.” The ending was amazing.
When I first saw it as a kid I didn’t quite get that Waynes character “Books” wanted to deliberately to go out in a shoot out before his cancer got worse.
I also didn’t originally catch that Books had established beefs with the 3 characters who wound up in the final shoot out.
Theres foreshadowing when the Sherriff tells Books he should get killed to save the taxpayers some money…
When Ron Howards character Gillom unloads on the barkeep, I didn’t get where this action was coming from. Then I remembered the earlier scene where Books told Gillom that a shootist succeeds by being “willing” ( to shoot).
The look of disappointment on Books face when he sees what he’s turned Gillom into, and then his relief when Gillom throws the pistol away. Then Gillom cant look his mother in the eye…
